Beef open 2024 regular season at Carolina Cobras

Omaha Beef @ Carolina Cobras

March 24th – 2:00pm CT

Greensboro Coliseum Complex

The 2024 regular season starts for the Omaha Beef this Sunday as they travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to take on the Carolina Cobras. The Beef tuned up for the game with an exhibition win over the Tri-City Tridents while the Cobras went to Nampa, Idaho and defeated the Idaho Horsemen 51-49. This will be the first meeting between the two squads.

The Beef controlled the pre-season game from the start as Tommy Armstrong scored on a short touchdown run and the defense forced four turnovers. Tabyus Taylor added two touchdown runs, Zion Williams had a rushing TD and Aaron Davis returned a missed field goal for a touchdown. Kacy Otto threw two touchdown passes (caught by Richy Anderson and Korell Kochlmoos) and hit Kochlmoos with a 2pt pass conversion. Eric Johnson and Jeff Mack added two-point extra point conversion rushes. The defense scored twice on fumble recoveries and once on an interception. Omaha’s new kicker, Ryan Hibbets, went 7 for 7 on extra points, and had a rouge.

Carolina was trailing 41-37 after Idaho scored with 8:33 left in the game, but the Cobras used a six-play drive to regain the lead when Adam Smith ran around the edge from nine yards out to grab the lead. Then the Cobras defense added a pick six by Charles Brooks with 54 seconds left. The Horsemen scored on an Austin Schaffer to Rashad Flanders pass with nine seconds left and Schaffer two-point extra point rush made it a two-point game. The kickoff, however, went out of bounds and the Cobras were able to run the clock out. The game stats showed a very even game, but the biggest difference was Carolina’s kicker, Kevin DiDio-Webber. DiDio-Webber scored the first deuce (2 points when kickoff goes through the goal post) of the season, went 7 for 7 on extra points, and put Idaho in some tough kickoff return situations as he hit the ball off the nets and they had to scramble to get the ball out of the endzone.  Quarterback Guy Myers led the Cobras going 18 for 31 for 156 yards and four touchdowns. Myers added 33 rushing yards and a touchdown. Adam Smith led the receiving group with seven catches for 73 yards and two touchdowns. Defensive back Javon Hayes led the Cobras with seven tackles. Former Beef Gibson Ziah (2021-2022) added four tackles, a sack and three quarterback hurries.
