Beef look to extend winning streak vs Rouxgaroux
| Louisiana Rouxgaroux @ Omaha Beef May 9th – 6:30pm CT Liberty First Credit Union Arena |
|
The Omaha Beef are looking to extend their winning streak to two games as they host the Louisiana Rouxgaroux Saturday at Liberty First Credit Union Arena. This is a big game in the playoff race as the top six teams will make the playoffs and right now these two teams are tied for the sixth position.
Last week the Beef were set to play the Amarillo Warbirds, but the National Arena League moved the schedule around after the Dallas Bulls were removed from the league and Omaha was given a bye week. They will now travel to Louisiana on May 30th for a game to finish the regular season.
Omaha earned its first win of the season on April 25th, beating the Dallas Bulls 52-18 in Ralston, while Louisiana fell at home 48-30 to the Salina Liberty. The matchup features two of the league’s top defenses by yards allowed: Louisiana ranks first at 174.3 yards per game, and Omaha is second at 183.8. Despite that, both teams are near the bottom in scoring defense, with Omaha sixth at 37.8 points allowed per game and Louisiana seventh at 39.5. Both also carry negative turnover margins as Louisiana sits at ‑1 and Omaha at ‑6 for the season.
Omaha made over its quarterback room again, adding two quarterbacks this week: veteran Vincent Espinoza and Ivan Corbin while releasing Giovanni Sanders and Tyler Lauenstein. Corbin played collegiately at Limestone, Tusculum, and Carson-Newman before spending time with the Iowa Barnstormers in the IFL this season. In five games with Iowa, Corbin went 20 of 44 for 181 yards and two touchdowns, and he added 47 rushes for 185 yards and six scores. His best outing came on April 25 when he carried the ball 17 times for 95 yards and five touchdowns in a loss to the Fishers Freight. Espinoza has played with six different indoor football teams over the last few years.
The Beef rushing attack is led by Tabyus Taylor (27 carries, 115 yards, 3 TDs) and David Ross (31 carries, 69 yards, 2 TDs). Taylor leads the NAL with an average of 57.5 yards per game in his two games played. As a team Omaha is 9th in the NAL averaging 55.2 rushing yards per game and they are 8th in passing offense at 111.3 ypg.
Top receiver Dequan Dudley has 14 catches for 212 yards and six touchdowns and is tenth in the NAL averaging 42.4 yards per game. He also ranks seventh in the NAL in kick return average (16.7 yards). Ross adds 13 receptions for 104 yards and a score, with additional targets Devanaire Conliffe (7 for 153 and 4 TDs), Lorenzo Thompson (5 for 88 and 1 TD), and Cameron Alves (4 for 22).
Jayshawn Washington leads the defensive unit with 31 tackles (8th in NAL 6.2 tpg), while defensive lineman Brandon Muno leads the team with three sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss, including two safety sacks against the Bulls amongst his 21 tackles. In the secondary, Jaylen Perkins has 29 tackles, and Terrance Jackson (20 tackles, 1 INT, 5 PB), Ponce Deleon (18 tackles, 1 INT), Trey Dudley-Giles (15 tackles, 3 PB), and Chris Perry (14 tackles, 1 INT) have also produced. Linebacker Jaylen Johnson has 17 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks in his three games played.
Kicker Chase Contreraz is second in the NAL with kicking extra point rate of 81.8 percent by going 18 of 22. He is one of six on field goal tries.
Louisiana leans on a two-pronged rushing attack as they rank sixth with 62.5 yards per game. D’Nerius Antonie has 44 carries for 143 yards and eight touchdowns, adding eight catches for 105 yards. Former Dallas Bull Dajon Richard has 61 rushes for 214 yards and five scores, plus 13 receptions for 108 yards and two touchdowns with the two teams this season. Quarterback Larry Moton went 10 of 21 for 130 yards last week vs. Salina in his second start; he has also played wide receiver in two games and ranks 10th in the NAL in rushing at 27.2 yards per game. Veteran Rashad Ridley leads the receiving corps with 17 catches for 171 yards and four touchdowns. The rest of the wideouts include Trayv’on Culbert (11 catches for 133 yards and two TDs; 9th in NAL receptions per game, 7th in yards per game), Jamarsha Huglon (six for 75), and former Beef player Jordan Barton (five for 78 and three TDs).
Currently the Rouxgaroux do not list a kicker on their roster. The team did sign a couple of returning players in defensive back Dominique Pugh and defensive lineman Jacobi Brewer. They also brought in lineman Cedric Hearvey.
Defensive back Levonta Hall leads the team with 34 tackles (12th in NAL tackles per game) with two interceptions. He is joined in the defensive backfield by La’Roderick Scott (19 tackles), Trayoun Maxie (15 tackles), and James Pitre (3 tackles, 1 INT). Linebacker Darrell Wallace is third on the team with 17 tackles. Defensive lineman Keontae Chavies leads the team with 3 tackles for loss, while teammates Raphael Turner (14 tackles, half a sack) and part time defensive player D’Nerius Antonie (10 tackles and team leading one and a half sacks) help lead the Rouxgaroux in allowing a league best 12.3 first downs to opponents and they sit third in red zone defense allowing touchdowns on 65.2 percent of tries.
Omaha will travel to Sioux City next week for the I-29 Battle part two with the Sioux City Bandits. The Bandits defeated the Beef 26-6 on April 4 in Ralston during the 56th meeting between the two teams.
