Omaha Beef @ Colorado Spartans

April 18th – 8pm CT

Denver Coliseum

28

The Omaha Beef traveled to Denver and went down 20 points, to come back and take the lead with 10:06 in the third quarter only to be outscored 19-0 the rest of the way as they were defeated by the Colorado Spartans 45-28. The Spartans scored touchdowns on six of their eight drives as the Beef offense could not get a big third or fourth down conversion.

Colorado built its early first quarter lead with a 12-play drive that ended with a Steven Newbold two-yard run, followed by Jonathan Cardoza-Chicas’s deuce. After the Beef missed a field goal, quarterback Javin Kilgo hit Brean Michael on a 37-yard pass and on the next possession Travion Mosby grabbed an interception and returned it 41 yards to make it 20-0. The Beef got on the board with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Kobe Gatson to Dequan Dudley with 9:43 remaining in the second quarter.  The Spartans answered with a five-yard pass from Kilgo to Newbold, but then the Beef went on to score 21 straight points to take their first lead of the game. Tabyus Taylor had two rushing touchdowns in that span of six- and two-yard dashes and in between those Devanaire Conliffe returned an interception 50 yards.  However, that was the final time the Beef would score as the Spartans answered with three straight Kilgo touchdown passes, two to Newbold and one to Bizzet Woodley.

Omaha started the game with Giovanni Sanders at quarterback as we went 1 for 2 passing but was replaced by Kobe Gatson after his interception.  Gatson went 4 of 8 for 39 yards and one touchdown. Taylor carried the ball 15 times for 58 yards and two touchdowns. Dudley, David Ross, Devanaire Conliffe, Lorenzo Thompson, and Korrell Koehlmoos each caught one pass. Linebacker Jaylen Johnson led the Beef with 9 tackles; Trey Dudley-Giles and Rudy Ngougni each had five.  Jaylen Perkins made four tackles with one sack.

Javin Kilgo completed 19 passes out of 30 attempts, accumulating 213 yards and throwing five touchdown passes for the Spartans.  Newbold’s (3 for 19 yds) three receptions all went for touchdowns as Woodley was the leading receiver with eight receptions for 116 yards and one touchdown. Michel added five receptions for 64 yards and one score and Alexis Rosario finished with three catches for 14 yards. Travion Mosby was the leading tackler for Colorado with seven and had one interception. Carver Shamelle Dumas and Dillion Thomas each added six tackles. Thomas and Sam Hammond registered sacks.

The Beef will return to Liberty First Credit Union on April 25th to host the Dallas Bulls.
