The Omaha Beef held the Rapid City Marshals scoreless for over 38 minutes on their way to a 62-12 victory Saturday at Liberty First Credit Union Arena. Omaha (7-0) stays unbeaten while the Marshals go to 0-7. The Beef’s top-rated defense forced four turnovers which turned into 21 points and Omaha scored eight touchdowns on ten possessions. 


The first quarter scoring started with Tommy Armstrong’s first of two four-yard touchdown runs. Tabyus Taylor would add a two-point extra point run and the Beef lead 8-0. Omaha would get the ball back and three plays later Armstrong hit Gourney Sloan on a 40-yard pass and the Beef lead 14-0 after one quarter. Taylor, who was making his Beef debut, closed the second quarter with a 13-yard touchdown run and Terrance Tolbert-McIntyre three-point PAT catch and it was 30-0 at halftime. Armstrong would finish the first half with four carries for 26 yards and two touchdowns while going 4 of 8 for 71 yards and one touchdown. Taylor added 42 rushing yards on 11 carries. 


In the second half the Omaha offense was turned over to Carlos Rogers Jr who would score on an eight-yard run on his first drive and the Beef lead was 36-0. The Marshals, who also made a change at quarterback, finally scored when Jauhem Bryd-Mix hit Darius Coty on a two-yard pass with 6:31 left in the third quarter. However, on the four-point extra point, Devanaire Conliffe picked off the pass attempt and returned it for four points. Conliffe would later catch a 25-yard touchdown pass from Rogers Jr and finished with five catches for 48 yards. Gourney Sloan caught his second touchdown pass of the game in the closing seconds of the third quarter from Rogers Jr and finished with two catches and 49 yards. 


The Beef defense allowed the Marshals only 39 rushing yards, 32 yards coming from Byrd-Mix who added the second Rapid City score with a 26-yard scramble with seven minutes left in the game. The two quarterbacks for Rapid City combined went 15 for 41 for 159 yards with three interceptions. Champions Indoor Football interceptions leader, Dreko Statham, added two more to bring his total to nine on the season. Andrew Jackson had the third pick and added six tackles on the night. Ponce Delone led the Beef with seven tackles. The Omaha defense gave up 159 yards to the Marshals and for the second consecutive week only allowed 12 points. On the year, the Beef are giving up an average of 20 points per game and have a turnover margin of +19. 


Omaha makes its final road trip of the season traveling up Interstate 29 to take on the Sioux City Bandits May 6th at the Tyson Events Center. The Beef’s final two regular season games are back at the Slaughterhouse as they play host to Topeka and the rematch with Sioux City. Rapid City will also hit the road as they travel to Gillette next week before returning to Summit Arena for their final two regular season games. 


OTHER NOTES:  Tabyus Taylor rushed for 501 yards and 16 touchdowns for the Wyoming Mustangs in 2022. Taylor scored 142 points and had 731 all-purpose yards as he was named the 2022 CIF Offensive Player of the Year.  

Omaha has a one game lead over Gillette (6-1) with three games remaining. The Mustangs host Rapid City this weekend before traveling to Billings and wrapping up the regular season at home vs Salina. Sioux City and Salina are tied for third with a 5-2 record. Sioux City has the home and home vs the Beef and between them a matchup with Salina. The Liberty are on the road for the other two games at SW Kansas and Gillette. The top 6 teams make the playoffs with the top two teams receiving first round byes. Billings stands at 3-4, SW Kansas at 2-5 and Topeka and Rapid City are 0-7.
