A sellout crowd of 3,709 watched as the Omaha Beef opened the 2023 regular season beating the Billings Outlaws 47-19 at Liberty First Credit Union Arena.  A strong defensive performance and an efficient offense let the Beef control the game from the start.

Omaha’s Tommy Armstrong started the game with three straight touchdown passes.  Armstrong connected with Devanaire Conliffe for a 27-yard strike, Jailin Singleton for a 15-yard score, and Gourney Sloan for a 10-yard touchdown. As the Beef took a 19-7 into the second quarter.  Armstrong threw 11 consecutive completions and didn’t throw his first incompletion until his second pass in the third quarter.  He finished the game 16-21 for 188 yards and five touchdowns.  The Beef added an Armstrong 1-yard sneak and a Traveon Samuel 1-yard run to increase their lead to 34-7.  Omaha used the CIF’s new PAT rule on their fourth attempt and were successful for three points as Armstrong connected with Conliffe.  A team scores three points when attempting a PAT from the five-yard line.  You can score four points if the attempt comes from the 10-yard line.  Sloan led the wideouts with 7 grabs for 93 yards and a touchdown, while Conliffe and Singleton each scored twice.

The Beef defensive front of JayShawn Washington, Tamar Heart, Jamar Claibourn never let the Outlaws offense feel comfortable.  Billings ran the ball 22 times for only 34 yards (1.5 average) and QB Vincent Espinoz was only able to complete 9 passes (9-24) while throwing an interception to Chris Perry.  Espinoz was able to connect with Isaiah Shaputis for a 36-yard touchdown and with Jo-EL Shaw for a 16-yard TD.  Omaha held the Outlaws to only 127 yards of offense. (2.6 average). Washington led the way with 8 tackles and a sack while Linebacker Cameron Hunt added 7 tackles.  Claibourn added another sack to go along with his five tackles.

The Outlaws Rodrick Jarrett blocked a Brandon Stewart 57 field goal attempt and Donta Marshall fell on it in the endzone in the early fourth quarter as Billings closed the deficit to 22 points.

The Beef (1-0) travel to Dodge City, KS next week to take on the Southwest Kansas Storm (0-1).
